​Ancestry and Early Life
​Imam Syed Yusuf Shah Bukhari was born in 1919 in the village of Lalpora, Beerwah (District Budgam), into a distinguished family known for its scholarly and spiritual lineage. His father, Syed Rasool Shah Bukhari, was a professional Imam. For over a decade, his father served in the Hazara Division of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa until illness necessitated his return to Kashmir.
​Before departing for Kashmir, a Sufi saint bestowed a special Wazifa (spiritual litany) upon him. Upon returning to his ancestral village of Lalpora, he resumed his duties as an Imam until his passing. Following his death, his son, Imam Syed Umar Shah Bukhari, took over the responsibilities. He was a scholar of great stature, a fact evidenced by his surviving hand-written manuscripts.
​Educational Journey
​Imam Syed Yusuf Shah Bukhari began his foundational education under the tutelage of his elder brother, studying:
​Languages: Urdu and Persian.
​Classical Literature: Gulistan, Bostan, and Pandnama.
​Jurisprudence: Kanz al-Daqaiq.
​Seeking deeper knowledge, he moved to Khag, where he spent five years under the guidance of the renowned Allama Maulana Syed Qutb Shah Rizvi (popularly known as Qutb Sahib Khag). There, he mastered:
​Principles of Quranic Exegesis (Tafsir).
​Principles of Hadith (Usul al-Hadith).
​Major Hadith collections, including Sahih Bukhari, Sahih Muslim, and Sunan al-Tirmidhi.
​For his specialized higher education, he traveled to Madrasa Siddiqia in Amritsar. He spent another five years there studying under the celebrated scholar Mufti Abdul Kabir, focusing on advanced Quranic and Hadith studies.
​Professional Life and Spiritual Path
​After completing his studies, he served as an Imam in Lahore before returning to Kashmir. His journey then led him to Bannu and Kohat in the North-West Frontier Province, where he balanced work as a small-scale contractor with his religious duties as an Imam.
​Upon his final return to Kashmir, he entered into a spiritual bond (Bay'ah) with the eminent Pir Meher Ali Shah. During the administration of Prime Minister Bakshi Ghulam Mohammad, he was appointed as the Headmaster in Harud Surosh, Khag. While he served as a teacher and local Imam, he eventually resigned from his government post, believing that professional obligations were hindering his spiritual and pastoral duties (Peeri-Mureedi). He was also a recognized Khalifa (spiritual successor) of Syed Mirak Shah Kashani.
​Legacy and Service
​Following the death of his elder brother, Syed Umar Shah Bukhari, the residents of Lalpora requested him to return to his birthplace. He served as the Imam of Lalpora Beerwah for approximately 40 years.
​His contribution extended far beyond spiritual guidance; he was a dedicated educator who mentored hundreds of students in the Quran and Hadith. He was a rare personality who embodied a perfect synthesis of Sharia (Divine Law) and Tariqa (Spiritual Path).
​Passing
​Imam Syed Yusuf Shah Bukhari departed from this mortal world in 1994 after a brief illness, leaving behind a legacy of devotion, scholarship, and spiritual enlightenment.
